Today, Justice Ranjan Gogoi was appointed as the 46th Chief Justice of India. He was the one who said that Indian democracy needs, “not only independent judges and noisy journalists but even independent journalists and sometimes noisy judges.”
President Ram Nath Kovind released warrants of appointment for Justice Gogoi. CJI Deepak Misra will retire on Oct 2. Justice Gogoi will be sworn in October 3.
Justice Gogoi will have tenure for over 13 months and would retire on Nov 17, 2019. In 1978, Justice Gogoi enrolled as an advocate. On Feb 28,2001, he was appointed as a permanent judge of the Gauhati HC.
On Feb 12, 2011, Justice Gogoi was appointed as Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana HC and later as the judge of SC on April 23, 2012.
Earlier, CJI Deepak Misra had recommended Justice Gogoi as the next CJI.
