Malayalam actress Kani Kusruthi has won the Best actress award in the Asia International Film Festival. The award was for the short film “Counterfeit Kunkoo”. The was directed by Reema Sengupta and has been garnering awards and accolades in festivals across the world.
Counterfeit Kunkoo was the first short film selected to showcase in the Sundance Festival in 15 years and the second Indian film ever to be selected for the festival. The movie was selected from 9000 entries. The story is about a middle- class woman in Indian context who struggles to live in the society alone. This character played by Kani Kusruti is the protagonist of the story and Kani’s portrayal has amazed both viewers and critics.
Born in Trivandrum to Dr. AK. Jayasree and Maitreya Maitreyan ,both social activists, Kani came to the limelight after her role in Malayalam anthology film Kerala Café in the segment “Island Express” . She has played a naxalite in the Mohanlal movie Shikkar and as a sex worker in Cocktail. Reema was impressed by the Kani’s performance in these movies and Kani was selected for Counterfiet Kunkoo.
Kani was brought up in Trivandrum. She began her acting lessons from Abhinaya Theatre Research Centre ,later moved to Thrisssur Drama School and she completed her theatre education at L’École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq, Paris.
The Jury of the Asian International Film Festival said,“Her portrayal of a woman with strong will who at the same time struggles with the inevitable reality was excellent.”
Kani now lives in Mumbai with her partner Anand Gandhi. Her latest work was with Vipin Vijay in his feature film.
